Miles For Smiles Cancer Foundation Colour Run crosses finish line for fifth year

KAMLOOPS — A group of children and a mascot shark led the way at the fifth annual Miles For Smiles Cancer Foundation Colour Run on Sunday (June 28) at Riverside Park.

“To see it grow into what it is today, with all of our amazing community groups, businesses and vendors who have helped out, has just been so incredible,” run founder Kayla Hermiston said. “It’s such a privilege.”

The adults followed the fish and youngsters onto the course under overcast skies and were soon ambushed by volunteers toting vibrant, non-toxic colour powder.

“It’s a little chaotic, but it’s become one of our signature events,” Hermiston said. “I’d love to see our 10th annual eventually. I would love to see over a thousand participants, as well. Today, we have over 100, which is a huge milestone for us.”

Miles for Smiles events have raised more than $30,000 for oncology departments at children’s hospitals across Canada, Hermiston said.

“Watching loved ones battle cancer without fully grasping the weight of what they were going through at the time, as I got older, I knew I wanted to turn that experience into some form of meaningful action,” Hermiston said. “That’s what brought us here.”
