Fifth-annual Colour Run Sunday to help raise money for childhood cancer

KAMLOOPS — Colours will fly at Riverside Park this Sunday (July 28) as the Miles For Smiles Cancer Foundation works to raise money to aid in the fight against childhood cancer.

The fifth annual Colour Run will get underway at 9:00 a.m. at the east end of Riverside Park near the Hope sign, and run until about 12:00 p.m.

Miles for Smiles founder Kayla Hermiston said the organization hopes to raise $10,000 this year, with money going toward children’s hospitals across Canada to help fund research initiatives and treatments in their oncology departments.

“I can’t believe its our fifth year already,” Hermiston said. “This event has grown into something truly incredible and every year we’re reminded that it is about so much more than the excitement of race day.”

“It’s about a community coming together to support children and families facing one of life’s toughest battles – pediatric cancer.”

Sunday’s family-friendly event will feature a five-kilometre course consisting of four 1.25-kilometre loops at Riverside Park. There is also a 1.25-kilometre option available for kids.

“Participants can run, walk, bike whatever suits your fancy, all while being thrown with vibrant colour powder,” Hermiston added. “We’re also going to have some vendor activation throughout the park so local community groups and organizations will be there.”

Hermiston said interested participants can register online or on site Sunday morning, though spots may be limited.

“The different colours kind of represent the different types of cancer because initially we didn’t just focus on childhood cancer,” Hermiston said. “The colour run was just a hit in the community and we decided to keep it on.”

“It’s non-toxic powder so it washes right out. At first, some people are a little bit unsure but then they just right into it.”
