KAMLOOPS — The provincial and federal governments are providing funding to expand fibre internet connectivity for rural communities in the Thompson-Okanagan region.

$63 million in funding from the two governments will be paid to Telus to construct a new fibre-optic network serving 3,959 households in 50 communities.

“High-speed internet is essential infrastructure for people to learn, work, connect, access health care and grow their businesses, no matter where they live,” said Diana Gibson, minister of citizens’ services.

“Through our partnership with the Government of Canada and Telus, we are expanding reliable connectivity across the regions like Thompson-Okanagan, ensuring more families, businesses and Indigenous communities can grow the region’s economy while benefiting from new opportunities close to home.”

The B.C. government said the improvements will benefit 28 communities in the Thompson-Okanagan and Lower Mainland-southwestern areas, including Sorrento, Shuswap and rural areas around Chase.

In the North Thompson, the expansion will cover 22 communities, including Vavenby and rural areas around Barriere.

“This investment highlights the strong partnership between British Columbia and the Government of Canada, and a shared commitment to building reliable infrastructure where it’s needed most,” said Doug Haughton, Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Area L director.

“For our communities, including families, businesses and First Nations across the TNRD Grasslands, it means better connectivity and greater access to the opportunities that come with it.”

The B.C. government said the improvements will make internet connections more reliable for residents, communities and businesses in the target areas.
