Kamloops council amends bylaw to account for email address error that could have affected AAP outcome

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council has moved to correct a technical error that could have resulted in several responses to its ongoing alternative approval processes (AAP) not being counted.

The city is asking the public to weigh in on a $16.75-million loan to purchase property for its public works yard on McMaster Way, as well as a $9-million loan for the third phase of its Tranquille sewer replacement project.

An initial version of the online electorate response form included embedded links to an incorrect email address.

While the problem was fixed as soon as it was discovered, the city did receive some forms to the incorrect address instead of the correct one – kamloopsaap@kamloops.ca.

At its council meeting Tuesday (May 26), Councillor Katie Neustaeter noted the initial AAP legislation did not allow response forms to be counted if they were sent to wrong email address.

Council responded by amending its AAP bylaw Tuesday to ensure the few response forms it received to the incorrect address will still be valid and count toward the final tally.

The last day to return response forms to the city is this Friday (May 29).

If 8,527 people respond in the negative – representing 10 per cent of eligible voters – the borrowing will be stopped.
