KAMLOOPS — Monday (April 20) is the first day residents can submit their opposition to a pair of alternative approval processes.

The first AAP is for the purchase of 965 McMaster Way, with the city looking to borrow $16.75 million dollars. The city has already purchased the property and is looking to shift the funding source to long-term borrowing.

The second AAP is for the third phase of the Tranquille sanitary sewer project where the city is seeking $9 million. That project is currently underway out toward the Kamloops Airport. It began last summer and is set to continue this year with completion expected this fall.

“What members of the public are not approving is ‘the thing.’ What they are approving is the ability to have a debt or a mortgage that extends beyond five years to fund this component. I know we hear quite often that, ‘We already voted for that and we didn’t want it.’ Well no, what you voted down was the funding process,” said Kamloops’ Director of Corporate Services David Hallinan during a council meeting last week.

The elector forms can be collected at city hall or printed from the city’s website. All forms must be received by by the deadline of May 29.

If 8,527 people vote against the bylaws, they will be defeated.
