Sections of Fourth Avenue to close again as sewer main project nears completion

KAMLOOPS — Traffic along Fourth Avenue in downtown Kamloops will be disrupted for the remainder of this month and much of June as work on a sewer main project enters the final stages with upcoming brickwork replacement in the area of Victoria Street and Lansdowne Street.

Fourth Avenue will be closed between Victoria Street and Seymour Street starting Tuesday (May 19) after the May long weekend. This closure will last until June 5 until paving work is completed.

Crews will then pause for 10 days so the roadway is clear for community events along Victoria Street – Hoops in the Loops June 6 and 7 and Pride Week June 8 to 14 – before resuming work on June 15.

Between June 15 and 26, Fourth Avenue will be closed between Victoria Street and Lansdowne Street.

The city notes unless otherwise stated, these road closures will be in effect 24 hours a day while work is ongoing.

Alleyways in the area will only be accessible to local traffic, but businesses within the impacted area will remain open while construction is going on.

Work to replace the Fourth Avenue sewer main resumed in early March as crews were able to complete the stretch from Lansdowne Street to St. Paul Street during last year’s construction season. The section between St. Paul Street and Battle Street reopened earlier this month.

This sewer main project – which builds off work done along Lansdowne Street in 2024 – will upgrade capacity downtown for the City Gardens development as well as the Kamloops Centre for the Arts project, which is under construction.

The city cautions there may still be ongoing traffic impacts along Fourth Avenue between Seymour Street and St. Paul Street until 2029, which is when construction on the arts centre is expected to wrap up.
