Fourth Avenue set to reopen as work on major sewer main project wraps up

KAMLOOPS — A lengthy sewer main project on Fourth Avenue in downtown Kamloops is scheduled to come to an end this week.

The City of Kamloops says paving work on Fourth Avenue between St. Paul Street and Battle Street has wrapped up, bringing the project one step closer to the finish line.

Line painting work is scheduled to take place before the downtown corridor reopens to traffic. That, the city said, should happen either by end of day Tuesday (May 5) or by Wednesday morning.

“This has been an impactful project and we truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding along the way,” a statement from the city said. “In mid-May, crews will need to return to Fourth Avenue and Victoria Street to replace brickwork. Further details on timing and impacts will be shared as soon as they are available.”

Work to replace the Fourth Avenue sewer main resumed in early March as crews were able to complete the stretch from Lansdowne Street to St. Paul Street during last year’s construction season.

This sewer main project – which builds off work done along Lansdowne Street in 2024 – will upgrade capacity downtown for the City Gardens development as well as the Kamloops Centre for the Arts project, which is under construction.

The city cautions there may still be ongoing traffic impacts along Fourth Avenue between Seymour Street and St. Paul Street until 2029, which is when construction on the arts centre is expected to wrap up.

“This is going to be about a two-and-a-half-year build. It really won’t be until 2029 that we see that traffic pattern reduced back to normal levels,” Adam Gordon, the city’s project delivery manager, told CFJC Today in February this year.
