KAMLOOPS — The United Way of British Columbia (UWBC) has launched its 10th annual Period Promise campaign, in hopes of meeting a growing need for menstrual products across the province.

The campaign runs until May 30 and it aims to tackle period poverty in communities across British Columbia. This year, the United Way says the need is more urgent than ever as more than 2.3 million period products have been requested across the province, and Kamloops is no different.

“In Kamloops and the Thompson-Nicola-Cariboo region that is running around 600,000 products,” Chelsea Ingram, a campaign manager at UWBC, told CFJC Today. “Last year, we were able to collect and give out about 65,000 products and so we’re hoping to continue to hit around that line this year.”

Ingram says this year, there is a greater need for tampons and cash donations as the United Way got a large donation of menstrual pads from Procter & Gamble. The organization adds menstrual products can cost as much as $100 a month, forcing many people to cut back when budgets get tight.

“It’s not just our most vulnerable people that are unable to have access to menstrual products,” Ingram said.

“One of the big things we talk about is around providing menstrual products in the community in workplaces, in bathrooms, so community members can continue to get out and do the things that they love to do without having that big barrier.”

In Kamloops, donations can be dropped on at the Delta Hotel on Victoria Street downtown and at Sun Life Financial across from Chances Casino. Ingram says additional locations will be added throughout the month.
