KAMLOOPS — Statistics Canada’s April Labour Force Survey shows that Kamloops has seen a small increase in unemployment in the last month, remaining relatively stable.

Stats Canada said Kamloops had an unemployment rate of 4.1 per cent in March, increasing to 4.9 per cent in April, marking a rise of 0.8 percentage points.

The amount of people looking for jobs has also dropped slightly, from 66.1 per cent to 65.2 per cent, a drop of 0.8 per centage points.

In B.C. as a whole, the provincial unemployment rate remains stable, rising by just 0.1 percentage point from 6.7 per cent in March.

“B.C.’s unemployment rate is 6.8 per cent, which is below the national average. While still a concern, B.C.’s youth unemployment rate improved to 14.4 per cent in April from 15.6 per cent in March, in line with the national average, and below Ontario and Alberta,” said Ravi Kahlon, B.C.’s Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth.

Kahlon said he has an optimistic outlook on the Stats Canada data for British Columbia, especially for blue collar jobs.

“While many provinces lost jobs last month, today’s (May 8) Labour Force Survey data shows that British Columbia’s construction and manufacturing sectors continue to grow, with nearly 12,000 jobs added in the past two months,” said Kahlon.

“This is a positive trend and reflects the work underway to build the major projects and infrastructure we need to grow our economy.”
