Cooler temperatures forecast as BCWS fights small fires around Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — After a brief thunderstorm breezed through the region on Wednesday (May 6) evening, several lightning-caused spot fires have popped up throughout the Kamloops area, including a pair to the north, and two out east toward Chase.

A week of hot weather, leading to brittle, dry conditions throughout the region, has the wildfire danger rating stationed at high.

“We are seeing hot and dry conditions right now,” outlined BCWS Fire Information Officer Cali Nessman Thursday (May 7). “Over this weekend, we are heading into some cooler temperatures, we are planning to see some showers across parts of the northern areas of the Kamloops Fire Centre. However, yes it is hot and dry. We do recognize that and want to ensure the public are being safe while using the back country.”

BC Wildfire crews are fully staffed for the summer ahead and are getting early action on four small lightning-sparked fires in the region.

“We have crews on all of the fires that were started Wednesday evening, all of which remain under one-hectare in size. Two are out of control, while one is being held and one is under control,” said Nessman.

While cooler weather is expected in the days ahead, the Kamloops Fire Centre has placed Category 2 and 3 open fires under prohibition, allowing campfires to remain for the time being.

“That means campfires are still allowed and we are encouraging the public to use that and enjoy the summer sun,” Nessman told CFJC News. “But at the same time, be sure you are following safe burning practices, have a firefighting hand tool on sight, as well as water and make sure you always fully extinguish the fire before you leave.”

With lightning there is the possibility of holdover fires. Anybody who sees something is advised to contact BCWS or utilize their app to report a fire.
