Kamloops MLA Stamer’s private members bill receives unanimous approval to advance

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. NDP government had signaled that it would oppose Kamloops MLA Ward Stamer’s private members bill around commercial vehicle dashcams on Monday (May 4) night, calling into question privacy and regulatory concerns.

“The Ministry of Transportation and Transit believes the bill should be amended,” said MLA George Anderson during debate on Monday morning.

Stamer’s bill looks to mandate dash cameras into commercial vehicles in the province. Despite the early concerns raised by government, the motion was passed without opposition during a standing vote Monday evening in Victoria.

“Honestly, it’s common sense. We know dashcams work. We know it’s going to make our roads safer,” said Stamer prior to the vote. “I don’t know why they are dragging their feet on this kind of thing, but I’m just hoping. But’s it’s bipartisan – it’s not just my bill, it’s the opportunity for all of us to do what’s right and move this effective legislation forward. Throw it into the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, get them to iron out a couple of regulation things they want to do on the enforcement side and we could start this thing happening before the snow flies.”

With the delay, the bill could return to the order paper next Monday for a vote on third reading, which would see the bill passed into law once it receives royal assent.

“Part of it is we are going to be talking to our federal counterparts and saying we are being proactive in British Columbia, hoping we can have a national strategy. But in the meantime, we are going to be starting to implement it in our province. This is what the minister has decided they are going to do, this is the effective date, and then we will be able to roll the system out as it’s determined,” added Stamer.
