KAMLOOPS — Kamloops is getting set to host its first-ever Jane’s Walk festival this weekend, which encourages people to discover their communities and connect with their neighbours.

Organized by the Propolis Cooperative Housing Society, the event will run Friday to Sunday (May 1 to 3) and it features a series of walking tours in downtown Kamloops and on the North Shore.

“The goal really is to get people walking in their neighbourhoods, meeting their neighbours, sharing stories about their neighbourhoods and seeing the city with new eyes,” Propolis Executive Director Lindsay Harris said.

Named after urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs, these free, community-led tours have been held in cities around the world for the past two decades. All walks are free and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and to bring a water bottle.

Registration is required for the free screening of Citizen Jane: Battle for the City at the Paramount Theatre on Sunday afternoon. A full schedule of events can be found online.

“These events are a way for citizens to get involved in saying, ‘We are seeing changes happening around our community and we want to contribute, we want to participate,'” Harris said. “We want to get people out in their neighbourhoods talking to each other and saying, ‘We can have a stake in how our city evolves.'”
