UPDATE (Nov. 21): In an email to CFJC Today, SD73 communications director Chelsea Isenor said the former Little Fort Elementary School site was listed as “for sale” from Sept. 24 to Oct. 31, 2025, on the district’s website, as well as BC Bid.

At this time, the District and Board are reviewing any offers received,” Isenor said. “Once a sale is finalized, we will share a public announcement.”

EARLIER: KAMLOOPS — One of two properties owned by School District 73 (SD73) that were deemed as no longer being required for educational purposes has been sold.

The City of Kamloops announced it has purchased Parkcrest Park from SD73 for $1,980,000. In a news release issued Thursday (Nov. 20), the city says the purchase of the property at 2393 Parkcrest Ave. in Brocklehurst will be funded by the municipality’s parkland reserve.

Parkcrest Park has historically been maintained and used by the city, despite it not being an official city park. With grounds maintenance and field bookings already incorporated into ongoing budgets and processes, the city says purchasing the property will have no impact on its operations.

“Preserving neighbourhood parkland provides lasting benefits for both the community and the environment,” Sherri Holmes, the city’s sport, recreation and wellness manager says. “The city will continue to maintain and use this property as a park, providing a space for recreation and for neighbourhood residents.”

In November 2024, SD73 voted to seek approval from B.C.’s Ministry of Education and Child Care to hand over two properties: Parkcrest Park and the former Little Fort Elementary School site at 216 Highway 24.

A third property SD73 also inquired about selling was Sa-Hali Park at 435 Arrowstone Dr. in Kamloops. However, the Board of Education voted unanimously not to pursue it due to “legal advice to abide by a restrictive covenant, which requires the board to sell only to the neighbouring land owners.”

The process of selling or handing over the properties arose after it was unveiled an accounting error led SD73 to a $2.2-million deficit for 2024-25.

As of November 2024, Parkcrest Park had an estimated value of just under $2 million, while Sa-Hali Park and the former Little Fort Elementary Schools had estimated values of $562,000 and $180,000 respectively.

CFJC Today has contacted SD73 for an update on the former Little Fort Elementary School site.
