KAMLOOPS — School District 73 (SD73) is pondering the future of three of its properties, including the site of the former Little Fort Elementary School.

The SD73 Board of Education identified the property at 216 Highway 24 in Little Fort and two properties in Kamloops, 2393 Parkcrest Ave. and 435 Arrowstone Dr., as not being required for educational purposes. The district is considering selling the three properties.

In a news release issued Tuesday (Oct. 1), SD73 notes the 1.82-acre parcel on Parkcrest Avenue and the 1.29-acre parcel on Arrowstone Drive are surrounded by residential units and are too small to be school sites, while the former Little Fort Elementary School was closed by a board motion in 1998 due to limited student enrolment.

“The next stage in the Disposition of Real Property process is to conduct public consultation,” SD73 states. “This public consultation process will allow the Board of Education to obtain the community’s feedback on the proposed disposal of lands and buildings.”

Residents can provide the SD73 Board of Education with their feedback on the future of the three buildings via a survey that will remain open until Oct. 11. The results will be shared during the Oct. 21 board meeting.

The notice comes nearly two weeks after it was unveiled an accounting error led SD73 to a $2.2 million deficit. The district’s budget reduction plan includes district-level staff being asked to rein back their spending on supplies and services by 15 to 25 per cent, and increasing field trip charges from $0.35 to $0.54 per kilometre.
