KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is asking residents in Brocklehurst, the North Shore and west Batchelor Heights for their feedback on a plan to shape the area’s environmental and water management strategies.

City staff have launched a survey that will run until 3:00 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 12) to better understand community experiences around stormwater and flooding while also helping to identify areas of concern.

The findings will be used to help develop a Strategic Watershed Plan for North Kamloops as part of the North Kamloops Watershed Project initiative.

“Participants are encouraged to share how they feel the city can better manage rainwater in their neighbourhoods and provide their level of concern about the effects of climate change on future flooding events,” a statement from the City of Kamloops said.

According to the city, the survey will ask residents about their experiences with flooding and drainage, their views on city stormwater management and their willingness to support different types of infrastructure solutions.

Those solutions may include things like green infrastructure — rain gardens, bioswales or permeable pavers — that mimic natural water absorption or more traditional infrastructure like curbs, gutters and piped stormwater systems to collect and redirect the flow of water.

“The city is also exploring how community involvement could help reduce overall stormwater management costs while improving long-term environmental outcomes,” the city statement added, though it’s not clear what that community involvement could look like.

“In previous community engagement related to watersheds, the city has found that information from residents has been helpful in the planning process to identify and confirm known areas of concern. These areas have then been flagged appropriately and, if necessary, added to the city’s Capital Plan for improvement.”

While the survey is available online, paper copies are also available at City Hall. According to the city, people who respond to the survey by the deadline will be have the opportunity to be entered for a chance to win a rain barrel.

Last year, the city asked residents of Barnhartvale, Campbell Creek and Dallas for their input as part of the East Kamloops Watershed Project initiative. Those results can be found here.
