KAMLOOPS — Former Kamloops Blazers’ captain Jermaine Loewen is calling it a career.

Loewen announced his retirement from hockey on Monday (Sept. 9) on social media, saying it is the best decision for his family.

The 27-year-old forward from Arborg, Manitoba, played last season in the ECHL, with stops in Fort Wayne and Kalamazoo.

Loewen became a fan favourite in Kamloops and his story became known nationwide.

He was adopted from a Jamaican orphanage and did not start playing organized hockey until he was 10 years old.

Loewen became the first Jamaican-born NHL draftee and wrote a children’s book that addresses racism.

He captained the Blazers during the 2018-2019 season, helping the WHL club to an unlikely run to the playoffs that included victory over Kelowna in a post-season play-in game.

Loewen played 295 regular season games over five seasons with Kamloops, racking up 78 goals and 142 points.
