Series of traffic closures coming to downtown Kamloops to accommodate BC Hydro work

KAMLOOPS — A heads-up to Kamloops drivers — there will be a series of traffic closures in the downtown core this week to accommodate BC Hydro work.

The left turn lane and one through lane of Seymour Street at Fourth Avenue will be closed to traffic Monday (May 26). Crews were seen setting up roadblocks earlier Monday morning.

Crews will also be working on Fourth Avenue between Seymour and Victoria streets on Tuesday and Wednesday (May 27 and 28), and between Victoria and Lansdowne streets on Thursday and Friday (May 29 and 30) this week.

BC Hydro says this work is not related to work it did on Third Avenue between Seymour and Lansdowne streets earlier this year. That section of road was closed for most of March “to accommodate critical BC Hydro infrastructure repairs.”

“This work is related to determining the elevation of our duct banks under the roadways which encase our lines,” Hydro spokesperson Susan Edgell told CFJC Today. “We are using a Hydrovac to create holes down to our feeder cables to determine how deep they are from the surface of the roadway.”

Edgell says the work is being done to prepare for any future work that may be needed in the area.

“There are seven specific areas that need to be measured and each will need to be backfilled with asphalt after the work is done, hence several dates are needed this week to get the work completed,” Edgell said.

The City of Kamloops is asking drivers to be careful in the area where crews are working and to obey all traffic control personnel. They also say drivers can expect delays while work is underway.
