KAMLOOPS — Drivers in downtown Kamloops are being told to expect a series of closures along a section of Third Avenue, as BC Hydro works to replace some of its infrastructure.

In a statement on its website, the City of Kamloops says Third Avenue will be closed in four phases between Seymour Street and Lansdowne Street from March 4 to March 24, “to accommodate critical BC Hydro infrastructure repairs.”

“Crews will be on site seven days a week during regular business hours,” the City said. “Street parking will be unavailable during the road closure and sidewalk/alley access may be impacted.”

“Additional adjacent temporary road closures may occur as a result of this work. Please use caution in the area and follow all detour signage and traffic control personnel.”

In a letter dated Friday (Feb. 28), BC Hydro said the first phase of work will take place between Seymour and Victoria streets between 7:00 a.m. on March 4 and 6:00 a.m. on March 6. During this phase, people won’t be able to access the parkade located in the Kelson Place building at 301 Victoria Street.

Phase two will have crews working between Victoria and Lansdowne streets from 7:00 a.m. on March 6 until 6:00 a.m. on March 16. It is also the longest of the four phases.

Both sections of Third Avenue will then be closed for phase three, which will run between 7:00 a.m. on March 14 and 6:00 a.m. on March 16, while phase four will see workers between Seymour and Victoria streets from 7:00 a.m. on March 16 until 6:00 a.m. on March 24.

“This a result of some issues that were identified during a routine inspection of our electrical system in the area,” Mary Anne Coules, a Stakeholder engagement Advisor at BC Hydro told CFJC Today. “We do routine inspections all the time to make sure that we can identify and correct any issues that will prevent unplanned outages that may otherwise occur.”

The parkade at Kelson Place will also be inaccessible during phases three and four of the work.

BC Hydro said there will be several planned power outages so that crews can complete their work safely.

“These outages will be scheduled from midnight to 5 a.m. to minimize any impacts to our customers, and we will notify all impacted customers directly in advance of the outages,” the letter said.

BC Hydro also said pedestrian access will still be maintained through the area while work is ongoing. They note traffic control personnel will be on site as well while work is underway.
