CSRD to use AAP to survey Shuswap, Falkland residents on road rescue service
SALMON ARM, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is shifting gears as it plans to survey Shuswap and Falkland-area residents about launching new road rescue services.
In 2024, the district’s board of directors approved using referendums to gauge whether residents of those areas support using tax revenue to fund the new services. However, a news release issued this week notes the board has now approved alternative approval processes (AAP) to gather assent.
While a referendum asks voters a ‘yes or no’ question about funding, an AAP requires 10 per cent of eligible voters to oppose the move in order to stop it from going forward. If the AAP gathers the required 10 per cent opposed, the board has 80 days to hold a referendum or go back to the drawing board.
The road rescue services would be offered by existing fire departments in Electoral Areas ‘C’ and ‘G’ (South Shuswap), as well as the North Shuswap and Falkland. At present, the areas are considered underserviced.
