KAMLOOPS — The Mustard Seed’s Coldest Night of the Year takes place Saturday (Feb. 22), a chance for the more fortunate in the community gain greater understanding of what it’s like to be without shelter.

This annual event begins at 4:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m. Participants can either walk two kilometres or five kilometres around Riverside Park.

“A lot of the funds will go toward our programs that need donations right now,” said Katie Hutchins, the community engagement and volunteer services manager at The Mustard Seed.

The Coldest Night’s goal is to help participants understand the hardship of being homeless, as they take a late-night walk in hopes of raising awareness.

“The Mustard Seed is a nonprofit organization that works with people who are experiencing homelessness or poverty. A lot of the funds will go toward our programs that need donations right now,” said Hutchins.

The Coldest Night has raised more than $15,000 so far this year, earmarked for the Mustard Seed’s programs. That is 75 per cent of the $20,000 goal.

The money is raised by the teams, who have each set a personal fundraising goal. Teams from previous years maintain the goal to try to beat what they have done.

“We’ll have kind of an opening ceremony, then people will go through the park walking. We will have lots of volunteers around the park just cheering people on. We also have pom-poms, so that’s really fun,” said Hutchins.

The agency plans to have another event next year and is looking forward to hosting even more teams and more money raised. You can donate money until March 1 on the Coldest Night of the Year website.
