LANGLEY B.C. — It was a case of good and news for the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday (Feb. 1) night, as they suffered their worst loss of the 2024/25 WHL season at the hands of the Vancouver Giants.

First the bad – the Blazers gave up seven unanswered goals in a 9-2 blowout loss to the Giants in Langley, with both of the Blazers goals coming in the dying seconds of a period. Also of concern was the fact that captain Emmitt Finnie did not play the third period, though its not clear why he left the game early.

Nearing the end of the second period, the Giants were up 7-0, before Samuel Borschowa scored his second of the season at 19:59 to end Brady Smith’s shutout bid. Smith finished with 28 saves on 30 shots at the Langley Events Centre.

The Giants responded with goals in the first and last minute of the third period to lead 9-1, before Nathan Behm beat the buzzer as well with his 26th of the season at 19:57.

Logan Edmonstone picked up the loss for the Blazers as he allowed four goals on 14 shots in the first period. Alex Scheiwiller allowed five goals on 15 shots in 40 minutes of relief work.

Now to the good news  – the Blazers are still in a playoff spot in the Western Conference as the Kelowna Rockets were beaten 6-3 by the Swift Current Saturday night.

With 39 points from 47 games, the eighth place Blazers are tied with the Seattle Thunderbirds, who have played one more game. The Wenatchee Wild are at 38 points from 47 games, while the Rockets are in last place with 37 points from 46 games.

Next up for the Blazers is a game in Everett at 4:05 p.m. Sunday against the league leading Silvertips. It’ll be their third game of the weekend following Friday’s 5-2 win over Swift Current.

Everett has lost back-to-back games at home following a 7-3 defeat to Medicine Hat Wednesday (Jan. 29) and a 10-3 blowout by the Spokane Chiefs yesterday.

The Blazers next home game at Sandman Centre is on Friday, Feb. 7, against the Silvertips.
