KAMLOOPS — Oren Shtrom and Emmitt Finnie had a pair of goals each as the Kamloops Blazers got back to winning ways against the Swift Current Broncos with a 5-2 triumph at Sandman Centre Friday (Jan. 31) night.

Nathan Behm also scored for the Blazers, who have moved into the eighth and final playoff spot in the WHL’s Western Conference. The 18-25-3-0 Blazers have 39 points from 46 games, one more than Wenatchee and two more than Seattle and Kelowna, who have played 47 and 45 games respectively.

Finnie opened the scoring a little over five minutes into the game before Shtrom doubled the Blazers lead at the midway point of the opening period.

Ryan Gould cut the lead in half in the opening minute of the second, though Shtrom’s second of the night made it 3-1 just past the four minute mark of the period. It’s the second two-goal game in as many weekends for the 20-year-old Shtrom, who is enjoying a career year with the Blazers.

The Broncos made it a 3-2 game through Carlin Dezainde at 7:49 of the second period, before Finnie’s second goal at 10:15 of the second, and an empty netter from Behm late in the third period gave the home team the two points.

Finnie added an assist to go with his goals, while Behm and Harrison Brunicke finished with two assists each.

Logan Edmonstone made 30 saves on 32 shots to pick up the win in net for Kamloops. The Broncos’ Reid Dyck made 22 saves on 26 shots in a losing effort.

The Blazers hit the road for a pair of games in Langley Saturday night against the Vancouver Giants and in Everett on Sunday against the league leading Silvertips.

They’re back in action at Sandman Centre on Friday, Feb. 7, against the Silvertips.
