Council to consider North Shore affordable housing project proposed by BC Housing

KAMLOOPS — A controversial BC Housing proposal for the North Shore will come back before Kamloops council next week.

BC Housing has proposed a 54-unit affordable housing development for the northwest corner of Leigh Road and Fortune Drive. The four-storey building would contain ‘deeply affordable studio apartments’ meant for formerly homeless residents who require supports to maintain housing, according to a BC Housing document.

If council approves a rezoning request, BC Housing will begin design work and search for an operator for the facility.

The proposal first came before council at its regular meeting on August 27, 2024.

Before it was discussed, council tabled the proposal in order to give City of Kamloops staff more time to further consult BC Housing on its plans.

Councillor Dale Bass said the time was needed for staff to convey the concerns that had already been expressed by members of the community.

Five months later, City of Kamloops staff say BC Housing has used the interim period to conduct ‘additional community consultation.’

In a report on that process coming to council next Tuesday (Feb. 4), BC Housing says questions from the public concerned such issues as community safety, on-site supports and impacts to property values.
