Fireworks or drone show? Kamloops council to decide future of Canada Day nighttime display

KAMLOOPS — The latest big decision for Kamloops council? Between Canada Day fireworks and another drone show in 2025.

The traditional fireworks show was scrapped for Canada Day this year because of dry conditions and the risk of wildfire. Instead, the city commissioned a drone show above Riverside Park, saying it was better than no show at all.

However, Cultural Services and Events Manager Dusan Magdolen says this year’s drone display had to start earlier and play out at a lower elevation than initially planned, thanks to impending poor weather. He says that meant people who saw the show at the park were wowed, but those watching from further away were underwhelmed.

Magdolen’s report to council notes the drone show was twice as expensive as a typical $20,000 fireworks display — though about one-quarter of the $42,000 price tag was covered by a provincial grant.

In its report, staff include a ‘pros and cons’ list for both options. Pros listed for the drone show include the ability of operate in dry conditions and the lack of impact on animals. Negatives include the expense and lower visibility.

For fireworks, positives were the lower cost, the greater visibility throughout the city and the fact that it is already established and accepted. Drawbacks include noise, weather variability and potential fire risks.

Council will debate the issue at its next regular meeting, set for next Tuesday (Oct. 8).
