SAVONA, B.C. — Volunteers from Skeetchestn Indian Band will be assisting with debris cleanup in Savona following the flash flood that hit the community on Sunday (June 30).

Starting Wednesday, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) says the initial focus will be on mud, organic materials and trees. The TNRD is partnering with Skeetchestn Indian Band and the Savona Improvement District.

Additionally, the TNRD says it will offer curbside collection of household flood debris from properties impacted by the flash flood on Monday, July 8. The Savona Improvement District will give out 6 Mil plastic bags for residents to clean-up certain items.

The TNRD asks residents to sort debris into the following piles:

  • Drywall and asbestos containing materials (please keep separate, double bag in 6 mil bags)
  • Mattresses, metal, large appliances, and furniture (stacked neatly)
  • Any spoiled food must be removed from fridges/freezers and double bagged
  • Wood and large building debris
  • Bagged refuse (food waste should be double bagged and placed at curbside Monday morning before 8 a.m.)
  • No hazardous or liquid materials such as oil, gas or other chemicals will be accepted curbside

Skeetchestn Indian Band volunteers and TNRD contractors will not enter private properties or structures to remove material or assist with cleanup.
