Kamloops Fire Rescue not issuing fireworks permits for the summer

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents will not be able to let their colours burst this Canada Day.

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) says it will not issue permits for consumer fireworks sale or use this summer.

“Despite the precipitation we’ve received this spring, vegetation in our area is drought stressed, dry and primed to burn,” Scott Johnson, KFR assistant chief, says. “Regardless of the amount of rain we might receive, residents should understand the extreme risk of fire in our city during the summer remains due to our desert-like environment. It only takes one spark to create disastrous consequences.”

In a news release issued Wednesday (June 19), KFR reminds residents that backyard fires, beach fires and any open flame in public spaces are banned throughout the City of Kamloops. KFR is asking residents to explore alternative ways to celebrate Canada Day and enjoy summer festivities.

Residents may be fined $250 for using, possessing, storing or selling illegal fireworks without a valid permit from KFR. Residents caught with illegal open fires can also face tickets and fines of up to $500.

Anyone who spots a fire within city limits is asked to call 911. Anyone who spots a fire outside of city limits is asked to call 911 or *5555 from a cellphone.
