BARRIERE, B.C. — We are learning more about the ATV crash that took the life of a Barriere-area teenager.

In a news release issued Tuesday (June 11), RCMP E-Division spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy confirms the incident happened Sunday afternoon near the 2-kilometre mark of the Darlington Creek Forest Service Road.

Grandy says a 15-year-old was driving an ATV when it rolled. The teen, identified by the principal of Barriere Secondary School as Myles Martens, died of his injuries.

RCMP say a passenger on the ATV suffered minor injuries.

Investigators have gathered evidence suggesting the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, though there was one available.

“This tragic event has had a significant impact on all communities surrounding Barriere,” said Cpl. Kyle Camalush. “The Barriere RCMP wish to send our condolences to the families and friends of those involved during this difficult time.”

Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact the Barriere detachment at (250) 672-9918.
