Two-semi crash on Highway 1 between Chase and Sorrento claims two lives

CHASE, B.C. — Two people are dead after a two-vehicle collision on the Trans Canada Highway between Chase and Sorrento late Monday (May 27) night.

Chase RCMP responded to the stretch of Highway 1 at around 11:45 p.m. Monday where it was learned a semi-trailer travelling east failed to make a right turn, leading it to flip over on its side and into the oncoming lane.

Police say an oncoming semi-truck traveling west was unable to stop in time and collided with the flipped semi.

“Sadly, both the driver and passenger of the flipped semi-truck passed away at the scene,” Cpl. James Grandy, BC RCMP Southeast District spokesperson says. “The driver of the oncoming truck suffered minor injuries.”

The investigation is ongoing. The stretch of Highway 1 was closed for more than six hours Tuesday morning before opening to single-lane alternating traffic.
