Smoke to be visible south of Kamloops as wildfire service burn 11 piles near Stake Lake for training
KAMLOOPS — Smoke is expected to be visible south of Kamloops this morning.
In a post to social media, the BC Wildfire Service says 11 pile burns will take place in the Stake Lake area from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday (May 15). The wildfire service says the piles will not exceed two metres in height by three metres in width, but smoke will be visible from the area, including near Lac Le Jeune Road and the Coquihalla Highway from Kamloops to Merritt.
“This exercise is part of mandatory annual training to prepare BC Wildfire Service staff for the fire season,” the wildfire service states. “By conducting this critical live fire exercise now, new crew leaders will have an opportunity to locate, respond and work through the process of managing a new wildfire incident within a controlled environment as we head into the 2024 fire season.”
The wildfire service adds experienced staff and instructors will be involved, and 70 firefighters with suppression tools and additional equipment are also on site.
