Iginla sinks Blazers with late short-handed marker

KAMLOOPS — Tij Iginla scored short-handed late in the third period to push his Kelowna Rockets to a 4-3 victory over the Kamloops Blazers in WHL action on Saturday (March 9) at Sandman Centre.

Emmitt Finnie, Andrew Thomson and Nathan Behm scored for Kamloops (20-37-3-3), which led 3-1 in the second period, but surrendered three consecutive goals to drop the B.C. Division matchup.

Kelowna, which blasted visiting Kamloops 9-1 on Friday (March 8), scored three power-play goals on Saturday, with Iginla, Andrew Cristall and Hiroki Gosjic doing the damage.

Rockets’ goaltender Jari Kykkanen stopped 30 shots to pick up the victory between the pipes.

Kelowna improved to 31-28-3-1 on the campaign.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old netminder Logan Edmonstone made his WHL debut on Saturday, stopping 36 shots for the Blazers in an impressive losing effort.

Kamloops is last in Western Conference standings and will be in action next against the Vancouver Giants on Friday (March 15) in Langley.
