KAMLOOPS — More than 100 booths filled the TRU Campus Activity Centre for its annual job fair, with employers ranging from Teck Resources to ASK Wellness and the BC Correctional Service.

“I’m really impressed with the type of employers we have. They are all amazing. It’s really nice. I think the students are surprised by the quality of employers we have, as well,” said Co-Chair of Career and Experiential Learning Larry Iles.

Employers came from as far away as Ontario for the annual job fair, thanks to the reputation of TRU students in the job market.

“It’s a good platform for me to get opportunities and know about better opportunities. It’s an open ended platform where I can get to know more and more about what kind of jobs I can pursue,” stated a soon-to-be graduate.

“Definitely a lot of opportunities. This is a really good place to connect to employers. They help you. ‘Please email on this day. Connect with us on LinkedIn, and then we can help you.’ It’s always an add-on. It’s [better] to come to job fair than not to,” added a TRU international student.

Coming out of the pandemic, the job market has turned in favour of the seeker, with businesses from every sector of the economy looking for new workers.

“It’s really a microcosm of what is going on in the industry — there is someone for everyone here. TRU has hundreds of programs and there is a job or industry here for every student as well,” said Iles.

The fair has a history of success with students reporting a number of job opportunities from last year.

“Last year’s job fair got me two opportunities, but unfortunately for some circumstances, I couldn’t do it,” said a second-year student. “Right now, I’m hoping for the same because I know this job fair helps a lot of students over here.”

The 2024 incarnation was the largest for TRU with the 100 plus booths being visited by thousands of students.

“This is crazy. We have 110 employers this year. We have never had this many. This place is actually at capacity. We actually had a waitlist, as well. It’s the top job fair we’ve had in 25 years,” noted Iles.
