POTHOLE SEASON

Pothole reporting options available to Kamloops residents

KAMLOOPS — Melting conditions in the city mean pothole season has arrived and the City of Kamloops is asking residents to report potholes as they come across them.

According to Streets and Environmental Services Manager Glen Farrow, older roads that are nearly in need of resurfacing are more likely to develop potholes when the warmer temperatures arrive with wet conditions. And the city uses a similar priority system as it does with snow removal to repair potholes — arterial roads and higher traffic routes will be addressed first, then local streets.

“If we look at key areas like Mission Flats Road, the upper side of Hillside Drive, Lansdowne Street, certain areas where we plan on spending time and energy this year on doing repairs, often that’s where we’re seeing things pop,” explains Farrow.

Residents are also reminded that certain spots, such as area highways and the Red Bridge and Halston Bridge, are not the city’s responsibility for pothole repairs. Those sections fall under the Ministry of Transportation and potholes reports on those stretches of road should be directed to MOT.

To report potholes on city streets, Farrow says people can use the MyKamloops app or by calling Civic Operations at (250) 828-3461, or the online website reporting tool.

“We still have three crews working 24 hours a day. We’ve shifted our crews from working snow and ice control to potholing. We are out patrolling, we are out handling and dealing with the worst of the worst, but we aren’t everywhere at all times so we are encouraging residents to call in and report potholes that develop.”

Kamloops drivers are also urged to leave enough space for city crews to work safely.
