KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s and men’s volleyball team started their weekend with the right foot last night (Jan. 19) when they welcomed the UBC Okanagan Heat inside TCC.

The women beat the visiting team by a score of 3-0. The win was TRU’s third straight-set sweep in a row, making the first time in CW history that they have won 12 consecutive sets.

“I’m glad the girls found their stability, this is a tough serving team and they went on a couple runs but we didn’t let it get to us too much so overall it was good performance,” said head coach Chad Grimm.

With the victory, the ‘Pack move to 6-9 on the season as are now 4-1 in their last four games.

Meanwhile, the men faced a five-set marathon and secured a 3-2 victory. With the win, the squad now holds a record of 8-7, just one game back of the eight and final playoff sport in the conference standings.

The win also puts TRU on the edge of winning the President’s Cup. They hold a 3-1 lead in the battle between TRU and UBCO for the annual trophy.

“We were going up against our rivals and they had our number last year – we look back at those matches last year as one of the reasons we didn’t make the playoffs – so that sits in guys heads,” said head coach Pat Hennelly. “We said after the fourth set that it’s time to take a deep breathe, close your eyes and start thinking about what it’s about. […] I appreciate the fact they came out in the fifth set and really set that tone early to give us some breathing room.”

These teams will be facing each other again this afternoon (Jan. 20) inside TCC.
