At last, two-way traffic scheduled to open on Falls Creek Bridge near Lytton

LYTTON, B.C. — After two years of construction since the 2021 B.C. floods, two-way traffic is finally scheduled to open on the Falls Creek Bridge (Jackass Mountain), located on Highway 1 between Lytton and Boston Bar.

Single-lane traffic flow in each direction is set to begin on Friday, December 15.

The temporary single-lane bridge is notorious for causing delays along Highway 1, and has been in place since a culvert washout in November of 2021. The permanent three-lane Falls Creek Bridge is still under construction and is scheduled to be completed next year.

The opening of two-way traffic flow and the future permanent bridge will ensure shorter and more efficient travel times for people passing through the area, located about 55 kilometres south of Spences Bridge.

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming stated completing this phase marks a significant achievement in the recovery of the 2021 atmospheric river.

“Over the last two years, I have seen the remarkable dedication of our ministry staff, contractors and Indigenous and municipal leaders who have come together to support the recovery from the unprecedented floods,” said Fleming.

Chief of Kanaka Bar Indian Band Jordan Spinks also emphasized on the importance of the milestone, including the collaboration with the ministry.

“It has been a long two years for our community since the atmospheric river event and how the aftermath impacted our daily commute,” said Spinks. “We have had a great relationship with the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Falls Creek Alliance team, and are grateful for the collaboration and information sharing during the highway repairs.”
