KAMLOOPS — On Tuesday (Dec. 12), Kamloops City Council will be advised to seek public input on possible changes to the traffic pattern at First and Lansdowne Street.

“The traffic signal at Lansdowne Street and 1st Avenue was installed in 2014 when the City completed the final phase of the Lorne Street enhancement project. This change brought direct connectivity between Lorne Street and Downtown, as well as improved pedestrian access to Riverside Park,” reads the report from city staff.

“Based on the needs expressed by the downtown business community at the time, a design favouring connectivity from 1st Avenue to Victoria Street over better intersection flow and level of service was selected. This resulted in a southbound left turn from 1st Avenue to Victoria Street being designed in place of a northbound left turn lane at Lansdowne Street,” continues the report. “Staff along with a consultant have revisited the intersection configuration options to review and confirm that it is possible to improve the intersection capacity. Findings show that traffic flow will improve vehicle queues along Lansdowne Street from 160m to 100m and reduce delays by 30% with the short-term option.”

The short-term option being investigated would be to provide two lanes for the northbound approach along First.
