Kamloops Shoebox Project collecting donations to uplift spirits of marginalized women

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Shoebox Project has begun gathering donations for women in need. Each year the program delivers boxes filled with gifts and essentials for people who might otherwise go without.

Those who participate are asked to fill a shoebox with $50 worth of essential care items, treats and small gifts, along with an encouraging note for the recipient. When thinking of what to include, Kamloops Chapter Coordinator Taylor Bertoli says it is best to create a box with items that you would like to be given yourself.

“Oftentimes, the holidays can be extremely lonely for people. And so by giving somebody a gift and showing them, ‘Hey, your community cares about you, and they see you.’ — it’s very impactful,” notes Bertoli. “Sometimes, it’s just that hand up that you need when you’re going through a difficult time.”

The boxes will be delivered to several different agencies throughout the city for marginalized women and women who have been impacted by homelessness. If someone doesn’t have time to go out and shop for items to put in a box, Bertoli says they can donate online instead.

“I really understand that this time of year is incredibly busy and the time committment (of shopping) along with the monetary donation can be a lot for people. That’s why I can swoop in, and take care of the rest, and know that your dollars are staying in Kamloops and going to a woman that is marginalized,” Bertoli adds.

Donations are still needed for this year’s campaign, as organizers hope to gather around 400 shoeboxes to distribute before the holidays.

“Sometimes we can be a last minute town, but everyone always pulls through with their generosity.”

Monetary contributions from individuals, or businesses can be made online, and filled-shoeboxes can be dropped off at Abbott Wealth Management (1211 Summit Drive #207) until December 19.
