One person dead, two others seriously injured following McGill Road crash

UPDATE (9:30 a.m.): The three young adults in the Volkswagen who were struck by the Dodge Ram truck near McGill Road and University Drive have been identified as members of the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack men’s volleyball team.

In a statement online, Brett Fairbairn, TRU’s president and vice-chancellor, says the university will not disclose the three students’ personal information in respect to the privacy of their families.

“It is hard to find words that express how we feel in these moments, in the face of such inexplicable tragedy,” Fairbairn states. “Our most sincere thoughts are with their families and loved ones, and on behalf of TRU, I offer our deepest condolences. We grieve with them, along with others, including their teammates, friends, classmates, and professors. This is a loss for the TRU community that will be felt for a long time.”

TRU says counselling and other supports are in place for those who need it. Students are encouraged to connect with the Faculty of Student Development at Old Main 1631.

In a news release issued Thursday (Nov. 30) morning, Kamloops RCMP say three young adults in a Volkswagen stopped at a red light were struck by a Dodge Ram truck that collided with several small trees. Police say there were secondary crashes with four other vehicles due to the collision.

“Our hearts are broken for the victims and their families involved in this terrible tragedy,” Supt. Jeff Pelley says. “The three young adults in the Volkswagen were all members of the community in their 20s, and the loss is sure to have far reaching impacts as we struggle to understand what happened and advance the active investigation as a priority.”

Additionally, RCMP say two occupants in a Jeep were also sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

BC Emergency Health Services told CFJC Today late Wednesday afternoon that paramedics took seven people to Royal Inland Hospital — three of which were in critical condition. Another four people were treated on scene who did not need hospital treatment.

Anyone with video or information related to the crash that has not yet been shared it with police is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP.
