Kamloops dispatch hub searching for emergency medical call takers

KAMLOOPS — BC Emergency Health Services is looking to hire more dispatchers for its service hub in Kamloops. Thursday (Nov. 16), CFJC crews got a look inside the facility and learned what it takes to answer a 9-1-1 call.

The Kamloops dispatch centre allocates emergency resources for all B.C. communities outside of the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. According to Paul Alberts, interim manager for BC EHS Kamloops Dispatch Operations, this location takes an average of 400-to-500 calls per day.

“(I’m) not sure if many people know in Kamloops that this centre exists. We are recruiting for full-time, emergency medical call takers. And we have a class that’s starting in January.”

To be considered for dispatch and call training, applicants need to be able to type 30 words per minute and be certified with a standard first aid and CPR course.

Alberts says the service is hoping to recruit people who can work with a clear head in stressful situations and have a caring mindset.

“Really, just looking for someone who wants to help out society and wants to help out citizens of B.C. in their time of need,” explains Alberts.

People interested in applying can find more information on the BC Emergency Health Services website.
