COLLINS: When it’s scary to venture outside

Aug 27, 2023 | 5:00 AM

VIOLENCE HAS BEEN PART OF our lives for a long time.

From the Biblical battles to Genghis Khan and the Mongol horde, from the Crusades to the constant wars between England, France and Spain, from the Wild West to mob violence to Prohibition, we have witnessed death without remorse, killing without penalty, World Wars, conflicts involving hatred and genocide, and the list goes on.

It seems that man has a penchant for inflicting punishment. To the point where today, it is hard to even venture outdoors without fear of being attacked in some way.

The number of “targeted “ deaths are on a rapid rise, and law enforcement agencies seem to have no idea how to get ahead of it. And I think we are at a tipping point.

When people live in fear when they’re just out for a stroll, that’s putting us at a point where all these “doomsday” shows intersect with reality.

There is no easy answer. Do we just say “I’m going to live my life and not let this violence influence me?” Do we have resources to give law enforcement agencies what they need to shut the gang wars down? Not likely.

But one thing we can’t do is hide our heads in the sand. We have to be brave enough to stand up for our beliefs and freedoms, despite the dangers.

If we shrink behind our doors, the war will never be won. It will not only take strong leaders to win, it will take strong citizens – people prepared to face this crisis head-on.

Oh, and one other thing. I urge the police to stop saying “the shooting was believed to be targeted” as if to make me feel safe and reassured. We are all targets in this war, and we are all going to be victims if we are afraid to stand up.

You may have heard of the phrase “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country”.This was never a political rallying cry. It was actually put together by Charles Weller in the late 1800’s and used as a typing drill for students learning to use the Remington typewriters of the day.

Perhaps it is time to make this exercise a reality. A rallying cry is almost what we need today to galvanize us into reality.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
