Midlife crisis… for a city? Kamloops shows off newly acquired Porsche

KAMLOOPS — On Tuesday, the City of Kamloops announced it had obtained a new Porsche.

The acquisition brings some questions to mind. Who is going to drive it? Is someone on the city staff going through a midlife crisis? Are taxpayers footing the bill for the 2008 Cayman?

“The City of Kamloops was successful in obtaining a grant through the BC Civil Forfeiture process,” Will Beatty, City of Kamloops Acting Community Services Manager, explains. “Vehicles, possessions, and so on, go through a civil process with the province to understand if [it was obtained] through the proceeds of crime.”

Don’t worry — you won’t see a Community Services Officer driving around issuing parking tickets from this sweet whip. The plan is to use it to illustrate the perils of living a life of crime.

“With the whole end goal of providing a Guns and Gangs initiative,” Beatty says. “as well as a prevention initiative in the community to find that prevention piece and get youth at a young age to showcase that crime doesn’t pay.”

The city is following the lead of other communities like Kelowna and Abbotsford in showcasing cars seized from civil forfeiture cases.

The plan is to clean up the car and bring it to Hot Nite in the City, where Beatty says they’ll show off some of the branding and educational plans they have for the Porsche to the public in attendance.

“Kelowna was successful in a civil forfeiture case as well, and we looked at the Abbotsford Police Service,” Beatty says. “We’re looking at more options that are available there, and we’re hopeful to have more information on Saturday at Hot Nite in the City for folks to see exactly what this vehicle is intended to look like.”
