KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce says four policies led by the organization, have been adopted by the BC Chamber of Commerce following the organization’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) earlier this month in Whistler.

A land trust initiative policy calls for the province to establish taxation laws that would encourage property owners to donate land to Land Trusts for the purpose of developing affordable housing. In return, the property owner would receive tax relief.

Another policy proposes changes to the Residential Tenancy Act to increase protection for landlords while encouraging them to maintain long-term tenants.

It points out the challenging crush of 29 new or increased taxes facing business since 2017 and calls on the province to establish taxation advisory groups to consider the impacts of taxation changes. In addition, it wants government to establish clear communication methods to advise the public and business community of upcoming tax changes.

A fourth policy asks government to continue working with the B.C. Chamber network to find options to deal with the skyrocketing insurance rate crisis facing stratas across the province.

In a news release Monday (June 19), the Chamber says it is also throwing its full support behind a call from the Barriere and Area Chamber of Commerce and the Clearwater & District Chamber of Commerce to support the efforts of Barriere Mayor Ward Stamer to convince the provincial government to institute a law calling for mandatory dash cams for commercial trucks in BC.

“The adoption of these policy resolutions highlights the dedication, commitment and work that are synonymous with the Kamloops & District Chamber of Commerce membership and Board of Directors,” said Kamloops Chamber President Tim Shoults.

The policies will now become part of the advocacy efforts of the provincial Chamber of Commerce. Following this month’s AGM, its key areas of focus include housing availability, taxation and highway safety.
