COLLINS: We need to find another money tree

Mar 31, 2023 | 5:30 AM

THE ANSWER TO everything is “We need a new money tree.” All of our problems would go away if we just had more money.

We would solve the opioid crisis, the homeless situation, the doctor and nurse shortages, and we’d have more paramedics, more clinics, and we’d do it all by just hauling some more money in from the money tree. What could be simpler?

If only it were that easy. But as we saw in the federal budget this week, and the provincial budgets across the country, there is only so much money to go around. And no matter which party we’re dealing with, they’re all facing the same dilemma.

Look at your own family budget. Grocery prices are up 10 percent, property taxes are going up, gas prices are high and you have to prioritize where you’re going to spend. The governments are no different.

We know the B.C. government is lagging behind in dealing with the opioid crisis, but does the fact that over half the deaths in Canada took place in B.C. mean we’re not dealing with it, or does it have more to do with the West Coast lifestyle?

I am not opening that can of worms. But I will say that it’s not for the faint of heart to try and figure out how to allocate the dollars needed to address the myriad of issues we’re facing.

And remember, YOU are the money tree and if you’re like me, there are only a few leaves left. Unlike the real trees that are about to get new growth and become lovely and green, our money trees are on pretty dry ground, and unlikely to increase their yield anytime soon.
