Avalanche Canada urging travelers to proceed with extreme caution heading into the mountains
KAMLOOPS — In light of the recent uptick in avalanches in the B.C. interior, Interior Health and Avalanche Canada are advising travelers planning to head over to the slopes to do so with strong caution as the danger of avalanches remains at an incline.
This comes after three people died in an avalanche near the town of Invermere on Wednesday (Mar. 1). The high volume in avalanches are due to a weak layer of ice deep in a snowpack, according to Avalanche Canada.
“It’s called ‘facets.’ It’s a very weak, angular, quite large crystals that sit at the base of the snowpack,” said Wendy Lewis, the Public Forecaster for Avalanche Canada.
