KAMLOOPS — A study looking into site servicing for a potential film studio in the Kamloops area concludes property on Tk’emlups te Secwepemc land may be the most viable as a future location.

The study, commissioned by the Thompson-Nicola Film Commission (TNFC) and completed by Allnorth Consultants, was made public this week.

It compares minimum five-acre properties in four locations around Kamloops — two in Dallas, one within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) off Sugarloaf Road in west Kamloops and the fourth near the CN railyard on the Tk’emlups reserve.

Utility servicing to prepare for a potential film studio is estimated to cost more than $2.6 million for each site.

However, according to study author James Garner, each site presents its own set of challenges.

One of the industrial sites on Andover Crescent in Dallas would have a hefty purchase price, while a property on Dallas Drive would require significant demolition and remediation.

For the Sugarloaf Road site, Garner said removal from the ALR could present a major barrier.

The Tk’emlups site would present challenges as well, but Garner notes the lease of the site on reserve land may be more attractive than a hefty up-front purchase price.

The study comes on the heels of a Motion Picture Studio Business Case commissioned by the TNFC and published in 2021.

Both studies will be made available to potential film studio developers to help them make decisions on whether to invest in the Kamloops area.
