KAMLOOPS — A few hundred school kids were able to play hooky from math, social studies and science Tuesday morning (Feb. 21) to attend the Scotties Tournament of Hearts at the Sandman Centre.

“I like it more than school, for sure. I enjoy it more because it’s very relaxing,” said Justin Farmer.

“I don’t really have a cheer because I think they are all doing pretty good,” added classmate Harper Andersen.

The students ranging from elementary to secondary travelled in from local Kamloops schools as well as a group from Lower Nicola and Merritt.

At multiple times throughout the morning, the students spaced around the rink began a ‘Go B.C.’ chant that managed to filter down to the team on the ice and skip Clancy Grandy.

“The energy is awesome, the kids definitely bring the energy into the arena and especially for a morning game its really nice to have that extra boost. Kind of cool to know it’s for us as well,” said Grandy after her morning victory.

Also in attendance was a group of students from Westsyde Secondary School, including some members of their curling team. Graduating curler Sydney Folz grew up watching players like Jennifer Jones and Kaitlyn Lawes at Olympic Games.

“This is amazing for me,” said Folz. “I’ve been curling since I was seven, I’ve been watching these women since I was four or five. This is amazing for me to watch, it’s a great experience. I’m so happy it’s here in Kamloops.”

Fellow Westsyde curler Deklan Pelland hopes showcasing the sport in Kamloops will help get more students interesting in joining the team.

“I hope it builds up more respect for it. I feel that curling is less respected among high school sports. You have the basketball, the football — curling not so much. Even just some of the guys out here have never seen curling before, they didn’t realize how far away it is or the amount of precision that’s required. it’s awesome,” said Pelland.

Students from across the region will be attending the morning draws for the next two days, helping provide an exciting atmosphere for the curlers.
