KAMLOOPS — The moment has finally arrived — the best women curlers from across the country are here and the 2023 Scotties are underway with the first draw starting 6 p.m. Friday (Feb. 17).

The curlers are hoping to be playing in front of a lot of people.

“Yeah I say bring it on. The more people, the better. It creates a really fun atmosphere,” said Team B.C. skip Clancy Grandy. “I really hope we can fill the place this week and really enjoy that.”

Wildcard skip Kaitlyn Lawes added, “If we can have the building sold out, that would be a ton of fun. We love playing in a loud environment, so we encouage everyone to come out and take in the action, and cheer as loud as they can.”

Three-time defending Scotties champion Kerri Einarson says she’ll have her entourage in the crowd at the Sandman Centre all week.

“Back in 2018 when it was in Penticton, there were so many fans. It was amazing, so I’m assuming that’s going to be the same here,” said three-time defending Scotties champion Kerri Einarson. “I’ve got a lot of family coming and some friends. We’re super excited to have fans in the stands.”

Einarson loves having her family there, especially her two daughters, who will be in attendance in Kamloops.

“It gives me goosebumps every time they cheer,” noted Einarson when she hears cheers from her family. “Just looking up and seeing my family in the stands, and especially my two little girls. If I am having a game where I’m struggling, I just look up at them and they really put things in perspective for me and put a smile on my face.”

Lawes, who has won a Scotties, a World Championship and two Olympic gold medals, says she is looking forward to playing at the Sandman Centre, where she’s watched Blazer games before with her partner who’s a scout for the L.A. Kings.

“The ice is great. It’s a fantastic building. I’ve come to watch some WHL games here and I know the atmosphere is fantastic here, too. I’m not surprised the ice is great,” she said.

Lawes and the rest of the field will have to knock off Einarson, who’s trying to match Colleen Jones as the only curlers to win four straight Scotties.

“It’s just like any other year. Yes, it would be amazing to win four in a row, but it’s not going to be easy,” said Einarson. “We don’t want to put that added pressure on us. We’re just going to take one game at a time and see how it goes.”
