KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council met Tuesday (Feb. 14) to discuss the city’s four-year budget proposal. Among the topics discussed were increased budgets to expand community service officers and their vehicles, Kamloops Fire Rescue personnel and cycling infrastructure.

The budget this year could result in a tax increase of between 4.9 per cent and 6.8 per cent depending on how much of the supplemental budget requests from Tuesday’s meeting are passed. The tax increase for the average property owner would then be between $124 and $170 annually.

Additional funds were requested for new projects as well.

The city proposed to build a marquee sign. Similar to the ones in Toronto or Nanaimo. A definitive location has not been decided, but councillors discussed how they would want to place it in Riverside Park if approved.

Two infrastructure-related projects in the form of off- and on-ramps, both along the Trans-Canada at Summit Drive and Pacific Way, respectively. These are being proposed to alleviate traffic backing back up onto Highway 1. Each project costs between a quarter- and a half-million dollars.

City beautification and active transport were also on the agenda. Beautification would involve landscaping, and planting trees at various locations around Kamloops. The city is additionally looking to unlock extra funding through the active transportation fund to make it easier for cyclists to traverse the city.

The supplementary budget items were not given final approval. Council made the decision to not strike down any of the proposals prior to the approval of the budget. The city council will vote on what it wants to pass in its supplemental budget on its March 7 committee of the whole meeting.
