RCMP deal with rash of crashes around Salmon Arm

SALMON ARM, B.C. — RCMP in Salmon Arm responded to 18 crashes over a course of just 10 days recently.

Mounties say 11 of those collisions occurred on the Trans Canada Highway.

The RCMP outlined several collisions of note in a news release.

On Jan. 24, a transport truck overturned in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Brodrick Creek Frontage Road at approximately 5:15 p.m. A pickup truck then slid into the wreckage of that trailer.

The highway was closed as crews removed the wreckage, which took between four and five hours.

No one was seriously injured in this incident.

At 6:15 p.m. that same day, the driver of a rental vehicle left the highway near Summit Forest Service Rod and down a 50-foot embankment. The driver was taken to hospital as a precaution but was released later that evening.

On Jan. 31, at approximately 3:05 p.m., a semi truck went off the highway and struck the garage of a house on Walsh Rd. in Blind Bay. The driver was taken to hospital for treatment of minor cuts. The homeowner was asleep at the time of the incident and was not injured.

Finally, at 8:55 p.m. on Feb. 1, two vehicles collided head-on on the highway. All occupants were assessed at the scene and did not need to go to hospital. Traffic was affected following the crash as the two wrecked vehicles were removed from the highway.

The RCMP say these, and the other 14 collisions, all occurred on slippery roads and during inclement weather.

Mounties advise motorists slow down and drive to conditions, noting speed limits are intended for perfect conditions and not for when snow is on the road.
