Tough night for Wolfpack in Kamloops and Calgary

KAMLOOPS — For the first time in 2023, all four WolfPack teams were in action Friday (Jan 14) night.

The basketball teams were at home, playing host to the UBC Thunderbirds at the TCC, while the volleyball squads travelled to Calgary to face Mount Royal.

Coming off a pair of wins last weekend in Kamloops, the WolfPack Women’s volleyball team were attempting to upset the U Sports 4th ranked team in Canada, the Mount Royal Cougars.

After dropping the first set 25-20, the ‘Pack would rebound to claim sets two and three. The Cougars showed why they are nationally ranked in the fourth set winning 25-16 and forcing a fifth and deciding battle to 15.

In the final set, the Cougars kept the momentum rolling claiming the 3-2 victory.

Kate Lamothe led the way for TRU with 18 kills. Abby Spratt had 35 assists.

It was the men’s teams first game back since the winter break after receiving a bye last weekend in Kamloops.

They would fall in straight sets 3-0, however the games was a lot closer than the scoreboard shows. TRU lost the first and second sets by a 25-20 score, and forced the third set into extras, eventually dropping it 27-25.

Rylan Ibbetson lead with 12 kills. Sam Elgert had 26 assists.

Back at home in Kamloops basketball took centre stage at the TCC.

In the women’s game, the Pack were able to hang with the T-Birds early, trailing 18-15 after the first quarter. But after that point, UBC would flex their offensive muscle en route to a 71-36 victory.

Makeba Taylor had 10 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

The men’s team would suffer a similar fate, leading by two after the first quarter, 22-20, but faltering down the stretch to lose 87-69.

Denys Bachurin had 17 in the loss.
