Long-term care changes will provide residents and families more say over care: B.C. Care Providers

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. government announced Thursday (November 3) that long-term care residents and their families will have more say going forward on issues that can severely impact their lives.

Many families and their loved ones have been frustrated throughout the pandemic about inconsistencies with staffing shortages, compliance with health regulations, and the overall lack of care.

Now, families in these settings will have more transparency with the operators and give them more say.

“There’s no question, operators understand the importance of families to make sure that their loved ones in care are well looked after and have that really good and open communication between the operator and the families,” says Terry Lake with the B.C. Care Providers Association.

Lake adds that the announcement will help give residents and families in these settings a more “united voice” when voicing concerns in these settings.

“I do think that this will raise the voices of families when it comes to provincial policies including those surrounding visitation and those measures taken to protect their loved ones,” said Lake.
